Those Potato Pancakes are one of the traditional meals or snacks in Slovakia. That’s where I come from and grew up there.
Slovakia is a very nice country in Europe. The most beautiful thing about them is the huge mountains called the High Tatras. They are called as a Spirit of Slovakia. Even though I grew up near them every time we go hiking there is every time something special about them. People can never get bored in there. Up there. The mountains are very big so there are hundreds of places to go and see. And I still didn’t see all of them. It’s no chance. Well, maybe it is. Maybe until I get old I will finally see every corner and every rock of those mountains. Could be a tiny chance of that. If one day you would decide to go on a trip to Europe I would definitely recommend going visit our High Tatras in Slovakia. No regrets.
And that’s where the Potato Pancakes come from. They kinda represent our country. Our big mountains. But also other delicious meals. For example these (I don’t even know how to call them cause they have a special name in our language), ok let’s say ,, Cheesy Gnocchi“. It’s like a little gnocchi shape made from potatoes and flour. And then they are mixed with a special cheese made only in Slovakia. It’s sheep cheese. But they made it in a different and special way. (Don’t even know the way, so don’t ask me). And they are topped with fried little pieces of bacon or onion. Oh, and served with a sour cream, which is also a special thing in our country.
So that’s our number 1 special meal in Slovakia. I would say that Potato Pancakes are number 2. Cause I love them. But they are best made in the countryside. And they taste amazing!
All you need for potato pancakes is:
- potatoes (main thing)
- garlic (as a must)
- and some salt and black pepper
If they won’t turn out well don’t be disappointed. They are not the easiest thing to cook. But also not a very hard one. So give it a second chance and try them. I think you’ll make it.
Potato Pancakes With Garlic DipPrint Recipe
- Potato Pancakes
- 5 medium Potatoes
- 1 Onion (cut)
- 3 cloves Garlic (mashed)
- 1 Egg
- 1 tsp. Salt
- pinch of Black Pepper
- 1 tsp. Marjoram
- 4-5 Tbsp. Flour
- Garlic Dip
- 1/2 cup Greek Plain Yoghurt or Sour Cream
- 2 cloves Garlic (mashed)
- 1/2 teaspoon Salt
Cut the potatoes into small and mix them in a food processor until smooth. Transfer them into a bowl and add remaining ingredients except for the flour. Mix everything until well combined.
Add 4 tablespoons of flour to the potato mixture. Give it a few gentle stirs. The mixture should be thick so that everything holds together during cooking, but not too thick otherwise the potato pancakes will be too hard for eating. Add more flour if needed.
Preheat a small pan over medium-high heat with a drizzle of olive oil. Gently spoon the potato mixture into the pan in a round shape just like regular pancakes. Cook for about 3-5 minutes per side, until the edges start to look dry and well fried. Flip the pancakes and finish cooking for 1-2 minutes.
For the Dip just mix all the ingredients together in a small bowl.
There is no rule on how you should eat those potato pancakes. You can dip, cut, rip, spread, roll ... Just find your own and Enjoy!
